Modern healthcare is not delivered by a single professional \u2013 it is delivered by a team. While
\nphysicians diagnose and surgeons operate, it is the allied health professional who ensures the
\ndiagnostic sample is accurately processed, the ventilator is correctly calibrated, the post-surgical
\npatient regains mobility, the cancer patient receives precisely targeted radiation, and the stroke
\nsurvivor relearns the ability to speak. Allied health professionals (AHPs) are the connective tissue
\nof clinical care \u2013 they translate a doctor\u2019s intent into patient outcomes. Without the laboratory
\ntechnologist, no diagnosis is confirmed; without the physiotherapist, no joint replacement achieves
\nits purpose; without the respiratory therapist, no ICU ventilator is optimally managed. In developed
\nhealthcare systems, every doctor is supported by four to six allied health professionals. In India,
\nthat ratio is a stark 1:1 \u2013 meaning our healthcare teams are operating with a fraction of the support
\nthey need, directly impacting patient safety, treatment quality, and clinical outcomes<\/p>\n
For students seeking meaningful, recession-proof careers with global mobility, and for academic
\ninstitutions looking to expand into high-demand disciplines, the allied health sector presents a
\nonce-in-a-generation opportunity. India currently has just 7 AHPs per 10,000 population against
\nbenchmarks of 80 in Australia and 151 in the United States. This translates to an estimated shortage
\nof 6.5 million professionals nationally. The WHO projects a global shortfall of 11.1 million health
\nworkers by 2030 \u2013 and allied health professions account for the fastest-growing segment within
\nthis gap. The United States alone will add two million new healthcare jobs by 2034, Japan faces a
\n570,000 care-worker deficit, and the UK\u2019s NHS plans to recruit 71,000 additional AHPs by 2036\u2013
\n37. For Indian graduates trained to international standards, these numbers represent not just
\nemployment but careers with purpose, global portability, and long-term security.<\/p>\n
The opportunity extends well beyond traditional disciplines. A new generation of allied health
\nprofessions is emerging at the intersection of technology, demographics, and evolving disease
\npatterns. Genetic counsellors \u2013 of whom India has fewer than 200 \u2013 will be essential as precision
\nmedicine becomes mainstream. Speech-language pathologists, with only 3,000 practitioners
\nserving 1.48 billion people, are critically needed for stroke rehabilitation, autism intervention, and
\ngeriatric care. Respiratory therapists, a profession that barely exists in India despite 55 million
\nCOPD patients, represent an enormous unmet need exposed further by the COVID-19 pandemic.
\nClinical informaticists and AI-health technologists will power the digital transformation of
\nhospitals. Geriatric care specialists will serve India\u2019s 60-plus population, projected to exceed 300
\nmillion by 2050. Mental health counsellors address an 80\u201390 per cent treatment gap that constitutes
\na national emergency. These are not niche roles; they are the professions that will define healthcare
\ndelivery over the next two decades, and the students who enter them now will lead the field.<\/p>\n
The Union Government has taken a decisive step by earmarking Rs 1,000 crore in the Union
\nBudget 2025\u201326 specifically for allied health workforce development, with a target of training one
\nlakh new AHPs over the next five years through upgraded and newly established training institutes.
\nThis commitment is reinforced by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare\u2019s launch, in
\nApril 2025, of competency-based curricula for ten allied health disciplines \u2013 including optometry,
\nradiology, anaesthesia technology, and applied psychology \u2013 developed in collaboration with the
\nNCAHP and mandatorily implementable from the 2026\u201327 academic session. The introduction of
\nNEET UG as a mandatory eligibility criterion for undergraduate allied health admissions from the
\nsame session further signals the government\u2019s intent to elevate these professions to parity with
\nmainstream medical education. These are welcome and necessary measures. However, the scale
\nof the challenge demands that this be treated as the beginning, not the ceiling, of national
\ninvestment.<\/p>\n
No amount of budgetary allocation or curricular reform will achieve its intended impact without a
\nfully functional regulatory infrastructure at both national and state levels. The NCAHP Act of 2021
\nwas enacted precisely to standardise education, ensure professional registration, and maintain
\nquality across the allied health sector. Yet, as of mid-2025, the Supreme Court has had to issue
\ncontempt notices to the Centre and states over non-implementation of the Act. The NCAHP itself
\nhas issued urgent directives to 22 states and union territories that have either failed to constitute
\ntheir allied and healthcare councils or have done so in violation of the Act\u2019s provisions. State
\ngovernments must treat the formation of compliant, functional state councils not as a bureaucratic
\nobligation but as the foundational step for enabling the entire allied health ecosystem \u2013 from
\ninstitutional accreditation and curriculum enforcement to professional registration and quality
\nassurance. Without operational state councils, training institutions cannot be properly accredited,
\ngraduates cannot be registered, and the workforce remains invisible to planners. The state
\ngovernments should clearly define the offices responsible for issue the essentiality certificates and
\nother requirements as defined in April 8, 2026 notification of NCAHP to facilitate timely initiation
\nof the programs form 2026-27 academic year. The NCAHP, for its part, must accelerate the
\ndevelopment of standards for the emerging professions that currently fall outside its framework \u2013
\nspeech-language pathology, audiology, genetic counselling, geriatric care, and digital health
\ntechnology \u2013 and work with state governments to create the regulatory pathways for their
\ninclusion.<\/p>\n
Higher education institutions have a pivotal role to play. India currently produces approximately
\n170,000 AHPs annually against a required output of over 275,000 \u2013 a training deficit that widens
\nwith each passing year. Institutions that invest now in accredited, competency-based programmes
\naligned with the NCAHP\u2019s 2025 curriculum framework will be first movers in a rapidly expanding
\nmarket. The priority areas for programme development include the 15 high-demand professions
\ncurrently missing from or underrepresented in the NCAHP framework, digital health and AI
\ncompetencies that must be embedded across all disciplines, simulation-based training and clinical
\napprenticeships that bridge the 65 per cent curriculum-industry skills mismatch, and specialisation
\ntracks in geriatrics, oncology, and critical care that meet emerging disease burden patterns.
\nAcademic institutions that build international articulation pathways \u2013 enabling Indian graduates to
\npractise in markets facing acute shortages \u2013 will create a compelling value proposition for students
\nand position India as a global supplier of healthcare talent, much as it has done in information
\ntechnology.<\/p>\n
The allied health workforce gap is not merely a crisis to be managed \u2013 it is an extraordinary
\nopportunity to be seized. The Union Government has laid the financial and curricular foundation;
\nthe NCAHP and state councils must now build the regulatory architecture with urgency and
\nfidelity to the Act. For the student choosing a career today, these professions offer purpose,
\nstability, and global relevance. For the academic institution charting its growth strategy, they offer
\nthe fastest-growing segment in healthcare education. And for the nation, every additional trained
\nAHP strengthens the healthcare team that stands between a patient and an adverse outcome. The
