What is Perfusion Technology?

During open-heart surgery the surgeon stops the heart. The perfusionist keeps the patient's blood circulating and oxygenated with a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass), controls temperature and blood chemistry, and works with the surgeon and the anaesthetist throughout. Perfusionists also run ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support for patients with failing heart or lungs, and manage intra-aortic balloon pumps and other circulatory support devices.
