BPT Students at Shri Venkateshwara University Meet Russian Delegates

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) students at Shri Venkateshwara University (SVU) attended the ICSSR conference and spoke with Russian delegates. The delegates introduced pulsed electromagnetic radiation (PEMR), a technology that rehabilitation researchers are studying.

Meeting Russian Delegates at the ICSSR Conference

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) conference gave BPT students at SVU a chance to speak directly with delegates from Russia. During the interaction, the delegates introduced PEMR and described its proposed uses in supporting cartilage-related tissue regeneration and vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels.

The session gave students exposure to emerging technologies and to how physiotherapy and rehabilitation are being approached in another country.

What Is PEMR?

PEMR uses short, repeated pulses of electromagnetic energy applied to the body. Research on this kind of therapy is usually published under the name pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy.

The research is still developing. A review of systematic reviews on PEMF in osteoarthritis found that it appeared effective for short-term pain relief and appeared safe. The review rated the certainty of that evidence as low and called for larger, better-designed trials. The uses the delegates described are proposed applications, and they are not established treatments.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

A BPT student spends five years on the degree, including a one-year internship. Our post on physiotherapy course duration explains each year, and our guide to physiotherapy course fees covers the cost.

At Apollo Healthcare Academy, we believe learning also happens outside the classroom, through global perspectives and current research. Apollo Knowledge has signed an MoU with Shri Venkateshwara University to advance industry-integrated allied health education.

Frequently Asked Questions

PEMR stands for pulsed electromagnetic radiation. It applies short, repeated pulses of electromagnetic energy to the body, and research on it is usually published as pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy.

No. Cartilage-related tissue regeneration was described at the session as a proposed application. A review of systematic reviews on PEMF in osteoarthritis rated the certainty of its evidence as low and asked for larger trials. Anyone considering such a therapy should speak to a qualified physiotherapist or doctor.

Vasodilation is the widening of blood vessels, which lets more blood flow through them.

The BPT degree runs for five years, including a one-year internship. The physiotherapy course duration post explains each year.
