Dietitian Course After 12th: Eligibility, Types and Careers

A dietitian course after 12th is usually a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics, and the certificates and diplomas that fill the search results often ask for a graduation first. This guide shows which routes you can join straight after Class 12, what each asks for, and what work they lead to. It also sets out the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) at Apollo Healthcare Academy (AHA).

The short answer: after Class 12 you can join a bachelor’s degree. At AHA that is the four-year B.ND (Honours), which asks for 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 50% marks. Diplomas and postgraduate diplomas, such as those from SSODL and the University of Delhi, ask for a bachelor’s degree first, so they are not routes straight after Class 12.

    What Does a Dietitian Do?

A dietitian plans food and diet to support health and treatment. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021 lists “Dietician” under “Nutrition Science Professional” and names two kinds: a clinical dietician and a food service dietician. In plain terms, a clinical dietitian works with patients and their treatment, and a food service dietitian works on meals served by an institution. Both spellings, dietitian and dietician, are in common use, and the Act uses the second.

Dietitian and Nutritionist: Are They the Same?

The Act puts both under one category, “Nutrition Science Professional”, and lists them separately: a dietician (clinical or food service) and a nutritionist (public health or sports). So the law treats them as related but different titles. If you are choosing between the two, check which one a course trains you for and which roles it names.

    Dietitian Course After 12th: Eligibility

Eligibility depends on the level of the course.

    • Degree after Class 12. At AHA you need 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 50% aggregate marks from a recognised board, and you must be 17 on 31 December of the calendar year of admission. Students with a PCM background who take Biology as a supplementary course are also eligible. NEET is not listed as a requirement for the B.ND.
    • Diploma. The Diploma in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics at SSODL asks for a graduate from any recognised university or institute. It is not a route after Class 12.
    • Postgraduate diploma. The Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition at the Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi, asks for a B.Sc. in listed subjects or an MBBS, with at least 55%.
    • Other degrees. Entry rules differ by university. Read the admission notice of the one you want, because not every programme page lists the subjects it requires.

    Dietitian Course Types and Duration

The table below compares the main routes, using the entry rule, length and fee each institution publishes.

Route Joins after Class 12? Length Fee as published
AHA, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) Yes 4 years ₹2.5 lakh per annum tuition
PDM University, B.Sc (Hons.) in Nutrition & Dietetics The page does not say Not stated on the page ₹71,500 per annum in total for the 2025 session (tuition ₹49,500, other academic charges ₹22,000, admission fee ₹4,200)
SSODL, Diploma in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics No, needs a graduation 12 months, distance learning with a mandatory campus contact session ₹46,000
University of Delhi, Institute of Home Economics, Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition No, needs a B.Sc. or MBBS One year in two semesters, plus a three-month hospital internship The page links to a separate fee page

Short certificate courses are also widely advertised. Their length, fee and recognition vary a great deal, so ask who awards the certificate and whether it counts as a recognised qualification before you pay.

Which Route Should You Choose After 12th?

If you want a dietitian qualification straight after Class 12, a bachelor’s degree is the usual route. A diploma or postgraduate diploma suits someone who already holds a degree and wants to add dietetics. Whichever you pick, look at the entry rule on the institution’s own page, the length, the hospital training and the fee for the whole course.

The B.ND (Honours) at Apollo Healthcare Academy

Here is how the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) is set up at Apollo Healthcare Academy.

    • Length: four years, with applied dietetics internships in the final two semesters.
    • Tuition fee: ₹2.5 lakh per annum.
    • Eligibility: 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 50% aggregate marks. Age 17 on 31 December of the year of admission.
    • What you study: the first year covers anatomy, physiology, communication and the basics of nutrition and food science. Later semesters include nutrition through the life cycle, medical nutrition therapy basics, advanced dietetics, nutrition in the critically ill, public health nutrition and sports nutrition.
    • Hospital training: hands-on training in real hospitals rises from 20% in semester one to 40%, 60% and then 100% from semester four onwards.
    • Degree: awarded through our partner university. See the partner universities page, and the partner hospitals page for where students train.

Scholarships are tuition fee waivers based on a composite score: half from the AHA Scholarship Test and half from your Class 12 aggregate. A score of 95 and above earns a 25% waiver, 90 to 94.99 earns 15%, and 85 to 89.99 earns 10%. Awards go in order of score until 10% of the intake is filled, so reaching a slab does not guarantee one. The rules are on our scholarship page, and the steps to apply are on the admissions page.

    Careers After a Dietitian Course

B.ND graduates can follow these career tracks:

    • Clinical Dietitian: therapeutic diet planning and patient nutritional management, in multi-speciality hospitals.
    • Nutrition Consultant: nutritional counselling and lifestyle management, in wellness centres and clinics.
    • Community Nutrition Associate: community nutrition planning and health awareness, in public health and NGO programmes.
    • Sports Nutrition Associate: sports nutrition planning, in sports and fitness centres.
    • Food and Nutrition Executive: nutrition analysis, food quality and wellness programme support, in the food industry and healthcare organisations.
    • Therapeutic Nutrition Specialist: disease-specific dietary care, in specialty healthcare centres.
    • Nutrition Programme Coordinator: managing nutrition services and preventive health programmes, in healthcare institutions.

A typical career path runs in four steps: junior nutrition associate at entry, clinical dietitian or nutrition consultant after about three to five years, therapeutic nutrition specialist or wellness supervisor after five to eight years, and nutrition services manager or clinical nutrition coordinator after eight years or more. Pay depends on the employer, so no salary figure is quoted here. Students can also continue to postgraduate study. We provide placement support, but it does not guarantee employment.

Questions to Ask Before You Join Any Dietitian Course

    1. Who awards the certificate, diploma or degree, and is it a recognised institution?
    2. Is the course taught in regular mode or by distance learning? The NCAHP Act defines a recognised qualification as one obtained “through regular learning mode” under the Act, so ask how the course you are considering stands under it.
    3. How many hospital hours are included, and where do you train?
    4. Is a hospital internship part of the course, and is it part of the fee?
    5. What is the total fee for the whole course, and which lines does it include?
    6. Which roles and credentials does the course lead to, and can the institution show you real examples?

    Where to Go Next

If the B.ND fits, read the programme page for the curriculum, see every course on the programmes page, and speak to the admissions team about fees and your scholarship slab. If you are still comparing fields, our guides to the radiology course after 12th and the optometry course after 12th cover two other allied health routes.
