DMLT vs BSc MLT: Fees, Duration and Which to Choose

DMLT course fees are not one number. Institutions print them per year, per semester or per instalment, so the cost of the whole course depends on how many of those you pay and what sits outside them. This guide puts the printed DMLT fees next to the fees for the four-year degree (BSc MLT, also written BMLT or B.MLS), compares length and entry rules, and helps you choose between the two. It also sets out the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) at Apollo Healthcare Academy (AHA).

The short answer: DMLT is the shorter and cheaper route. The NCAHP curriculum for the diploma runs two years, and two institutions in this guide print fees that add up to ₹1,18,200 and ₹1,23,000 for the full course. The degree takes four years and the yearly fees printed here run from ₹1.2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh. The degree opens higher entry levels and a direct route to a master’s, and at some universities a DMLT holder can move on to the degree later.

BSc MLT, BMLT and B.MLS: Are They the Same?

They are different names for degree-level courses in medical laboratory work. The UGC’s list of degrees uses B.MLS, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, with a minimum of four years and 10+2 as the entry qualification. Some universities still say BSc MLT or BMLT, and DIT University prints its BMLT as three years plus a one-year compulsory internship, which is four years in all. DMLT is a different level: a diploma. For the full forms and what each name stands for, read our guide to the MLT full form.

DMLT vs BSc MLT at a Glance

    DMLT BSc MLT (B.MLS)
    Level Diploma Bachelor’s degree
Length Two years under the NCAHP curriculum Four years including an internship (UGC minimum is four years)
Entry Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. AHA asks for 50% aggregate
Fees printed in this guide ₹57,000 to ₹63,000 a year at the two-year courses ₹1.2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh a year
Next step Lateral entry to a degree at some universities Master’s degree (M.MLS is two years after a bachelor’s)

DMLT Course Fees: What Institutions Print

The table shows what each institution prints on its own page for the DMLT, and the last column does the sum for the whole course.

Institution Length Fee as printed Whole course
    PDM University 2 years ₹57,000 a year (tuition ₹36,000 and other academic charges ₹21,000), plus a one-time admission fee of ₹4,200 ₹1,18,200
Centurion University (Bhubaneswar campus) 2 years ₹63,000 in year 1 and ₹60,000 in year 2 ₹1,23,000
CT University 3 years as printed ₹35,000 per semester ₹2,10,000 if the semester fee stays the same (six semesters)

These are the fees for the named courses, not an average for India. Government institute fees are set by each state and institute, so read the fee notice of the one you want. Fees change every year, so check the institution’s own page for the current figure before you decide.

What the DMLT Fee Leaves Out

Two courses with the same headline fee can cost different amounts. Look for these:

    • Admission fee. PDM University prints a one-time admission fee of ₹4,200 outside its yearly fee. DIT University, for its degree, prints a non-refundable admission fee of ₹10,000 and refundable caution money of ₹5,000 on top of the programme fee.
    • What the “other charges” cover. At PDM University the other academic charges include the development fund, the examination fee and the alumni fee. Where a page prints only a tuition and a services fee, ask what the services fee covers.
    • Hostel and transport. PDM University prices these separately from the course fee.
    • Clinical posting and internship. Ask whether hospital training is inside the fee or billed on top.

BSc MLT Fees: What Institutions Print

Degree fees are printed the same mixed way, so the table again shows the whole-course sum where the page allows one.

Institution Length Fee as printed Whole course
Sri Ramachandra, Chennai (B.MLS) 4 years including a one-year internship ₹1,25,000 per year ₹5,00,000 if the yearly fee stays the same
CT University (B.MLS) 4 years ₹60,000 per semester ₹4,80,000 if the semester fee stays the same (eight semesters)
DIT University (BMLT, session 2026-27) 3 years plus a 1-year internship ₹1,39,400 for the first year (two instalments of ₹69,700, all-India category) Only the first year is printed
AHA, B.MLS 4 years Tuition ₹2.5 lakh per annum ₹10,00,000 in tuition over four years, before any scholarship

AHA’s tuition is higher than the other degree fees in this table. The B.MLS at AHA includes more than 800 hours of clinical rotations in Apollo Hospital laboratories, hands-on hospital training that rises from 20% in semester one to 100% from semester four onwards, and two compulsory rotatory internship semesters. Ask the admissions team what the tuition fee includes. AHA scholarships are tuition fee waivers based on a composite score: a score of 95 and above earns 25%, 90 to 94.99 earns 15% and 85 to 89.99 earns 10%. Awards go in order of score until 10% of the intake is filled, so reaching a slab does not guarantee one. The rules are on our scholarship page.

DMLT Course Duration: Two Years, Not One

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) notified a competency-based DMLT curriculum on 1 July 2026, and it runs two years. Institutions may adopt it from 2026-27, and adoption becomes mandatory from 2027-28, so you may still see different lengths while institutes move across: CT University, for example, prints its DMLT as three years. A recent government recruitment notice has also asked for a one-year DMLT, which is why “DMLT 1 year course fees” is still searched. Ask the institution for the length of the course in writing, and for who awards the qualification.

The B.MLS is a four-year degree. The UGC sets four years as the minimum, and at AHA the last two semesters are compulsory rotatory internships along with a research project.

DMLT Course Eligibility and BSc MLT Entry Rules

DMLT. The NCAHP curriculum asks for Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognised board. Institutions add their own marks: PDM University asks for 50% in aggregate.

B.MLS at AHA. You need 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 50% aggregate marks from a recognised board, and you must be 17 on 31 December of the calendar year of admission. Students with a PCM background who take Biology as a supplementary course are also eligible.

Other universities. Entry rules differ, so read the admission notice of the one you want. Sri Ramachandra, for example, asks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) and age 17 at admission.

    What Each Course Teaches

The NCAHP’s DMLT curriculum prepares students, called Medical Laboratory Associates, to work across the stages of laboratory testing before, during and after the test, with attention to quality, patient safety and ethics. Ask any institute for its DMLT syllabus in writing, because the subject list depends on how it has adopted the curriculum.

The B.MLS at AHA starts with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, the fundamentals of medical laboratory science and basic emergency care. It moves into biochemistry, microbiology and haematology, and then into bacteriology, clinical haematology, immunohaematology and transfusion medicine, virology and immunology, genetics and molecular biology, clinical pathology, mycology and parasitology, analytical biochemistry, cytology and histopathology, and laboratory quality control. The last two semesters are internships with a research project.

Jobs and Pay After DMLT and BSc MLT

Government notices show how employers treat the two qualifications. In two recent notices, a lab technician post that asks for a DMLT sits at Pay Level 2, with basic pay from ₹19,900 to ₹63,200 a month, and a post that asks for a bachelor’s degree sits at Pay Level 6, from ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400. These are basic pay before allowances, and our lab technician salary guide sets out the notices, the posts and the qualifications each asked for. Private-sector pay depends on the employer, the city and the role, and no official source gives a figure, so none is quoted here.

DMLT holders usually start as lab technicians or assistants in hospital laboratories, diagnostic labs and blood banks. B.MLS graduates from AHA can follow these tracks: medical laboratory scientist, clinical biochemist associate, microbiology laboratory technologist, haematology technologist, molecular diagnostics associate, histopathology and cytology technologist, and laboratory quality coordinator. A typical path runs from junior technologist at entry to senior technologist after about three to five years, supervisor or diagnostic specialist after five to eight years, and laboratory manager after eight years or more. Students can also continue to a master’s. We provide placement support, but it does not guarantee employment.

Can You Do BSc MLT After DMLT?

In some cases, yes. Sri Ramachandra, for example, prints lateral entry to the second year of its B.MLS for students who passed the D.MLT with 50% marks. Rules differ from one university to the next, and the time you save depends on whether the university accepts your diploma. If you plan to take a DMLT first, ask before you join whether any university will count it towards a degree. At AHA, the admissions team can tell you what is available for diploma holders.

One more point for anyone choosing a diploma now: a 2026-27 university curriculum document that follows the national allied health guidelines records that most working groups agreed to phase out diploma programmes within five years and to create bridge routes for existing diploma holders. That is a recommendation, not a rule, and the NCAHP has notified a DMLT curriculum, so the course continues. It is still a reason to ask how you could move on to a degree.

DMLT or BSc MLT: Which Should You Choose?

    • Choose DMLT if you want to start work in two years, your budget is tight and a technician role in a laboratory is the goal. Check the length, the awarding body and whether a degree route exists later.
    • Choose the degree if you want supervisory or quality roles, posts that ask for a bachelor’s degree, a master’s later (M.MLS is two years after a bachelor’s) and longer hospital training. It costs more and takes four years.
    • Whichever you choose, get four things in writing: who awards the qualification, how many hours of hospital training are included, whether an internship is part of the course, and the total fee with every charge.

The B.MLS at Apollo Healthcare Academy

Here is how the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science is set up at Apollo Healthcare Academy.

Questions to Ask Before You Pay Any Lab Technology Fee

    • Who awards the diploma or degree, and is the institution recognised?
    • How long is the course in writing, and is the internship part of it?
    • How many hospital hours are included, and where do you train?
    • What is the total fee for the whole course, and which charges sit outside it (admission, caution money, exams, hostel)?
    • Can a diploma holder move on to a degree, and in which year do they enter?
    • What does placement support mean in practice? Be careful with promises of a guaranteed job.

    Where to Go Next

If the B.MLS fits, read the programme page for the curriculum, see every course on the programmes page, and speak to the admissions team about fees and your scholarship slab. FAQs

What Is the DMLT Course Fee in India?

There is no single fee. Each institution prints its own, and the format differs: per year, per semester or per instalment. PDM University prints ₹57,000 a year plus a one-time admission fee of ₹4,200 for its two-year DMLT, Centurion University prints ₹63,000 in year one and ₹60,000 in year two, and CT University prints ₹35,000 per semester. Add up the whole course and ask what sits outside the fee.

How Much Are DMLT Course Fees in a Private College?

It depends on the college and its length. Three universities print fees that add up to about ₹1.18 lakh to ₹2.1 lakh for the whole course. Read the fee page of the college you are considering, and ask about admission fees, exam fees, hostel and clinical posting charges.

How Many Years Is the DMLT Course?

Two years under the NCAHP’s DMLT curriculum, notified on 1 July 2026. Adoption becomes mandatory from 2027-28, so an institute may still print a different length: CT University, for example, prints three years. Ask for the length of the course in writing.

Is DMLT Equal to a Degree?

No. DMLT is a diploma, while the B.MLS is a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of four years in the UGC’s list of degrees. Government notices set different pay levels for posts that ask for each, as our lab technician salary guide explains.

Can I Do BSc MLT After DMLT?

Some universities allow it. Sri Ramachandra, for example, prints lateral entry to the second year of its B.MLS for students who passed the D.MLT with 50% marks. Rules differ by university, so ask before you join a diploma whether any university will count it towards a degree.

What Is the Eligibility for the DMLT Course?

The NCAHP curriculum asks for Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognised board. Institutions add their own marks: PDM University asks for 50% in aggregate. Read the admission notice of the institute you want.

What Is the Difference Between DMLT and BMLT?

DMLT is a diploma in medical laboratory technology. BMLT, BSc MLT and B.MLS are names for degree-level courses in the same field, and the UGC’s list of degrees uses B.MLS with a minimum of four years. The degree is longer and costs more, and it leads to a master’s.

Which Is Better, DMLT or BSc MLT?

It depends on your goal and your budget. DMLT is the shorter and cheaper route to a technician role. The degree takes four years and suits supervisory, quality and master’s routes. Compare who awards the course, the hospital training, the internship and the total fee.

What Is the Fee for the B.MLS at Apollo Healthcare Academy?

The tuition fee for the B.MLS is ₹2.5 lakh per annum, and the programme is four years, so tuition comes to ₹10 lakh over four years if the yearly fee stays the same, before any scholarship. Scholarships of 25%, 15% or 10% of tuition go to students in order of composite score until 10% of the intake is filled, so meeting a slab does not guarantee one. Ask the admissions team what the fee includes.

What Can You Do After DMLT and BSc MLT?

DMLT holders usually start as lab technicians or assistants in hospital laboratories, diagnostic labs and blood banks. B.MLS graduates from AHA can follow tracks such as medical laboratory scientist, clinical biochemist associate, microbiology laboratory technologist, haematology technologist and laboratory quality coordinator. Pay depends on the employer and the role, so no figure is quoted here.
