MLT full form is Medical Laboratory Technology. It is a paramedical field in which you learn to test samples such as blood, urine and tissue, so that doctors can diagnose illness and plan treatment. People also use “MLT” for the person who does this work, a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist. This guide gives the full form of MLT and of every course that uses the name. It then explains what the course covers, who can join, how long it takes, what it costs at Apollo Healthcare Academy and the jobs it leads to.
MLT full form in medical use
In healthcare, MLT stands for Medical Laboratory Technology. You will also see Medical Laboratory Technician, which names the job rather than the course. Some colleges call their course Medical Laboratory Science instead. The programme we deliver with our partner universities, the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS), is one of them. The names differ, but these are similar courses built around laboratory testing for diagnosis.

Other meanings of MLT
MLT is not only a medical term. In physics, M, L and T stand for mass, length and time, the base quantities used in dimensional formulae. In the pharmaceutical industry, MLT can mean a microbial limit test, a check on how many microbes a product contains. This article is about the medical meaning.
What does an MLT professional do?
A lab technician works behind the scenes of almost every diagnosis. A normal day can include:
- Collecting and labelling samples, or receiving them from wards and collection centres
- Preparing samples and running tests on laboratory machines
- Checking results for errors and sending reports to doctors
- Keeping records and following safety and infection-control rules
The work is split across areas such as biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, pathology, immunology and blood banking.
What the MLT course covers
Most MLT courses teach the same core areas: anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, haematology, immunology, blood banking, and laboratory management and quality control. The depth depends on the level. A certificate stays with the basics, and a bachelor’s degree goes further into each area. This is how the four-year B.MLS is organised, across eight semesters:
| Semesters | What you study |
|---|---|
| I and II | The foundations: human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and record keeping, communication skills, computer applications in healthcare, first aid, medical law and ethics, biochemistry, microbiology, the basics of haematology and research methods |
| III and IV | The core laboratory subjects: bacteriology, clinical haematology, immunohaematology and transfusion medicine, virology and immunology, genetics and molecular biology, clinical pathology, and laboratory management and quality control. Clinical training starts, with observation |
| V and VI | Advanced subjects: mycology and parasitology, analytical biochemistry, cytology and histopathology, clinical biochemistry, and healthcare quality and patient safety. Clinical training moves to hands-on work |
| VII and VIII | Two compulsory rotatory internships, a research project and a dissertation |
Our programme page also lists 800+ hours of hands-on training in Apollo Hospital laboratories. The curriculum can be updated, so confirm the current subject list with the admissions team.
Who can join an MLT course?
For a certificate or diploma, some colleges accept students after Class 10, while others ask for Class 12 science. For a bachelor’s degree you need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This is what the B.MLS at Apollo Healthcare Academy asks for:
- Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology
- At least 50% in Class 12 with those subjects
- Age 17 by 31 December of the admission year
- Students from a PCM background who take Biology as an additional subject can also apply
Check the latest rules on the Apollo Healthcare Academy admissions page before you apply.
How many years is the MLT course?
A certificate usually takes six months to a year, a diploma one to two years and a bachelor’s three to four years. The B.MLS at Apollo Healthcare Academy takes four years. The last two semesters are compulsory rotatory internships, along with a research project.
MLT course fees
Fees depend on the level, the college and whether it is government or private. The figures you find online vary widely and rarely say where they come from, so ask every college for its full fee structure in writing. At Apollo Healthcare Academy, the tuition fee for the B.MLS is ₹2.5 lakh per annum.
Scholarships are tuition fee waivers based on a composite score: half from the AHA Scholarship Test and half from your Class 12 aggregate. A score of 95 and above earns a 25% waiver, 90 to 94.99 earns 15%, and 85 to 89.99 earns 10%. Awards go in order of score until 10% of the intake is filled, so reaching a slab does not guarantee a waiver. The rules for the 2026-27 session are on the scholarship page.
Jobs after an MLT course
Graduates of the B.MLS can work as:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Clinical Biochemist
- Associate Microbiology Technologist
- Haematology Technologist
- Molecular Diagnostics Associate
- Histopathology and Cytology Technologist
- Laboratory Quality Coordinator
Diploma and certificate holders usually start as lab technicians or assistants. Jobs are found in hospital laboratories, diagnostic labs, blood banks, research labs and public health labs. If you want to study further, you can do a master’s in medical laboratory sciences.
MLT salary in India
Pay depends on your qualification, city, employer and experience. Sites that quote fresher pay for a bachelor’s degree mostly land between about ₹2 lakh and ₹4 lakh a year, which is roughly ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month. Diploma holders are usually quoted lower, and experienced technologists, supervisors and lab managers are quoted much higher. These are commonly quoted figures from other websites, and many of them do not give a source. They are not an Apollo Healthcare Academy promise or a guaranteed starting salary.
