Cardiac Technician Course: Duration, Eligibility and Career

A cardiac technician runs the tests that show how a patient’s heart is working: ECGs, treadmill tests, Holter monitoring, echocardiograms and support inside the cath lab. If you are choosing a course after Class 12, the first thing to know is that “cardiac technician” is an everyday job title and not one fixed qualification. Training ranges from two-year diplomas to four-year degrees, and the right route depends on how far you want to go. This guide covers the routes, durations, eligibility, subjects, roles and the career path, so you can pick a cardiac technician course with the facts in hand.

    What Is a Cardiac Technician?

A cardiac technician is an allied health professional who performs heart diagnostics and assists cardiologists. Hospitals use several titles for the same family of work: cardiac technician, cardiology technician, cardiac care technician, cardiovascular technologist, ECG technician and echo technician.

The NCAHP Act 2021 groups these roles under the category Cardio-vascular, Neuroscience and Pulmonary Technology Professional. The titles it lists include Cardiovascular Technologist and Electrocardiogram (ECG) Technologist or Echocardiogram (ECHO) Technologist. A cardiac technician is not a doctor. The technician carries out tests and procedures under a cardiologist’s direction, and the cardiologist interprets the results and decides treatment.

Cardiac Technician Course: Diploma and Degree Routes

There are two main routes after Class 12.

    • Diploma route: Max Healthcare Education offers a two-year Diploma in Cardiac Care Technology, with four semesters and an eight-month clinical internship. It suits students who want to start working sooner.
    • Degree route: Four-year programmes such as the B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology at SRMIST, the B.Sc (Hons) Cardiovascular Technology at ADYPU and the Bachelor of Cardiovascular Technology (B.CVT) at Apollo Healthcare Academy. A degree runs for four years and, at the Academy, includes cath lab and electrophysiology training and two internship semesters.

The NCAHP Act 2021 describes an allied health diploma or degree as not less than 2,000 hours spread over two to four years, divided into semesters. A short certificate that runs for months is therefore a different thing from a diploma. Before you pay any fee, check that the course is offered by a recognised institution and what qualification it awards.

    Cardiac Technician Course Duration

    Route Typical Duration Example
Diploma 2 years, with an 8-month clinical internship Max Healthcare Education, Diploma in Cardiac Care Technology
Degree 4 years, including internship SRMIST, B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology
Degree 4 years ADYPU, B.Sc (Hons) Cardiovascular Technology
Degree 4 years Apollo Healthcare Academy, B.CVT

At Apollo Healthcare Academy the B.CVT runs for four years. Semesters VII and VIII are compulsory rotatory internships with a research project, so graduates enter work with a full year of hospital practice behind them.

Eligibility for a Cardiac Technician Course

Eligibility depends on the institution, but the pattern is consistent.

    • B.CVT at Apollo Healthcare Academy: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) and at least 50% aggregate. The candidate must be 17 years old on 31 December of the admission year. Students from the PCM stream who take Biology as a supplementary course are also eligible.
    • B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology at SRMIST: Class 12 with PCB and at least 50%, with an age of 17 and no more than 30.
    • Diploma at Max Healthcare Education: Class 12 with PCB or PCM and at least 40%, or at least 50% for other streams, with an age of 17 to 25 and relaxations for reserved categories.

Some universities allow lateral entry into the degree for students who already hold a relevant diploma, subject to NCAHP guidelines. If you plan to start with a diploma and upgrade later, ask the university about lateral entry before you enrol.

    What You Study

The B.CVT curriculum at Apollo Healthcare Academy covers the basics of ECG, echocardiography (levels I to III), Holter and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, exercise ECG and treadmill testing, cardiac catheterisation (I and II), cath lab protocols, electrophysiology and pacing, interventional cardiology technology and advanced ECG.

Practical training increases each semester: 20% hands-on in semester I, 40% in semester II, 60% in semester III and 100% from semester IV onwards. Students train on simulators and rotate through electrophysiology labs and Cardiac Care Units across Apollo Hospitals. The programme prepares students for BLS and ACLS certification. Apollo Healthcare Academy’s partner hospitals host these rotations.

ECG, Echo and Cath Lab Technician Roles

The course trains you for three main working areas.

    • ECG and stress testing: recording resting ECGs, running treadmill tests and fitting Holter and ambulatory blood pressure monitors.
    • Echocardiography: helping to acquire ultrasound images of the heart under a cardiologist’s supervision.
    • Cath lab and electrophysiology: preparing patients, monitoring them during catheterisation and electrophysiology procedures, and supporting the cardiologist with equipment. The B.CVT curriculum includes cath lab protocols and electrophysiology for this work.

If you are comparing allied health careers, our guides to the OT technician course, the radiology course after 12th and medical laboratory technology show how the routes compare.

Career Path After a Cardiac Technician Course

B.CVT graduates can work as Cardiovascular Technologist, Cath Lab Technologist, Cardiac Diagnostics Associate, Electrophysiology Lab Associate, Cardiac Monitoring Specialist, Interventional Cardiology Assistant or Cardiovascular Care Coordinator.

A typical progression runs from junior technologist in the first two years, to senior cardiac care associate at three to five years, to cath lab specialist or diagnostics supervisor at five to eight years, and to cardiac services manager after eight years. Pay depends on the employer, the city and the role. Placement support at the Academy does not guarantee employment.

    Cardiac Technician Course Fees

Fees vary widely between a diploma and a degree. SRMIST prints ₹2,00,000 a year for its four-year B.Sc Cardiac Care Technology. The B.CVT at Apollo Healthcare Academy has a tuition fee of ₹2.5 lakh per annum. The Academy offers merit scholarships of 10% to 25% under the slabs on the programme page, until 10% of the intake is filled. See the scholarship page for the current slabs.
